COMMUNITY FARM
Growing Compassion, Feeding Our Community
At Happy Compromise Farm + Sanctuary, growing food isn’t just about seeds and soil; it’s about hope, equity, and connection. Located in a food desert where nearly 19% of the community experiences food insecurity, we’ve made it our mission to address food access head-on. Food is a basic human right, and through our farm program, we’re working to ensure everyone has access to healthy, locally grown produce.
Tackling Food Insecurity With Care
Did you know that 13.5% of households in the U.S. face food insecurity? That statistic takes on an even deeper meaning here in our area, where food access is almost double the national amount, despite being surrounded by farms. The barriers of financial hardship, limited grocery options, and health challenges make nutritious food a luxury many simply cannot afford.
We’re committed to changing the narrative. By growing an abundant supply of plant-based produce and sharing it through our Free Farm Stand, we’re breaking down barriers and bringing fresh, compassionately grown food to the tables of those who need it most.
The Free Farm Stand
The HCF+S Free Farm Stand is a small but mighty step toward a more food-secure future. Stocked with fresh veggies, fruit, plants, seeds, and even flowers - all grown on the community farm - it’s open to anyone in the area who needs a helping hand. We believe food is a human right, and our goal is to create community and provide resources for anyone in need - no questions asked.
2025 is our third season of running the Free Farm Stand, and each year we have given away more and more produce, plants, and flowers. Last year, we distributed more than 3,000 pounds of produce, 1,000 plant starts so people could grow their own food, and more than 500 flower bouquets. This year, we have dedicated farm staff, more infrastructure, and two satellite locations, and know our impact will be even greater.
Empowering Self-Sufficiency
Food access is only the beginning. We want to empower others to grow their own food for lasting impact. This year, we’ve given away more than 2,000 plant starts to help our neighbors get started, plus countless seed packets. From herbs on windowsills to flourishing backyard gardens, these efforts are sowing the seeds of food security.
We’re here to help others learn how to cultivate their own fresh produce, recognizing that food sovereignty is a powerful tool in dismantling hunger and poverty - please check out our monthly classes at the Waverly Library for more!
More Than a Farm
Our investment in community doesn’t stop at food. Alongside the Free Farm Stand, we’re proud to host a Little Free Library, providing stories, knowledge, and inspiration to everyone who visits. We also have a Free Pet Pantry with cat food and dog treats for the animals in need in your life (ferals included!). We hope to continue to expand this space into a community hub as more resources become available.
