ABOUT
Happy Compromise Farm
+ Sanctuary

A place where compassion and action come together to create meaningful change. Nestled in the heart of New York’s picturesque Southern Tier, our sanctuary and community farm exist to create a kinder world for all.

 Our Mission

At Happy Compromise Farm + Sanctuary, we are dedicated to rescuing farmed and companion animals in need and providing them with forever homes where they can thrive. Through veganic, regenerative agriculture, we grow beyond-organic food available in our Free Farm Stand. We advocate for sustainable, eco-conscious lifestyle choices that every person can adopt to help slow climate change and protect our shared future.

What We Do

Every aspect of our work reflects a commitment to building a kinder world:

  • Animal Rescue: We save and provide forever homes for both farmed and companion animals, offering them a safe, loving refuge for life.

  • Community Farm: We grow high-quality, beyond-organic produce, plants, and flowers and distribute them in our Free Farm Stand.

  • Compassion + Connection: Through our open volunteer days, we invite visitors to join us in caring for others and making an impact.

Our Beliefs

We are proudly LGBTQ-founded and -led, and inclusivity is at the very heart of what we do. Happy Compromise Farm + Sanctuary stands for equity, compassion, and community. Our goal is to dismantle systems of oppression and provide a sanctuary—not just for animals, but for all humans seeking comfort, connection, and healing. We are a safe space for everyone, regardless of background or identity.

Our History

Happy Compromise Farm + Sanctuary was founded in 2020 in Oregon. We started as a small farm and sanctuary, and had every intention of building the organization on that initial property. But just a year and a half later, our cofounders had to evacuate with 80 rescued residents for ten days because of wildfires. With the worsening wildfire and drought situation we were facing on the West Coast, we made the incredibly difficult decision to relocate the entire organization - including all of the animals - to the Southern Tier of New York in September 2021.

Since then, we have restarted both the farm and sanctuary from scratch. We converted a sprawling lawn into a one-acre community farm and 50-tree fruit orchard; completely renovated an old dairy barn; installed acres and acres of fencing and outbuildings, built our Free Farm Stand; and so much more. We currently care for more than 100 farmed and companion animals of many different species, providing lifelong homes and the absolute best care available. We grow and distribute thousands of pounds of beyond-organic produce, along with many other offerings, to our rural, food desert community every year.

When we made the move from Oregon to New York, we were looking for a safe haven for the animals who had been through so much to get to sanctuary. We didn’t know the area at all, and had no idea how impactful and unique our work would be in this new place. But we unknowing ended up in the place that needed us most, and for that, we are grateful.

At Happy Compromise, we're driven by the vision of a fair and safe world for all marginalized beings. Whether you're visiting our sanctuary, supporting our mission, or sharing our story, every step you take with us helps sow the seeds of meaningful change.
